Be Healthier In 2018

Get fit. Eat better. Lose weight. Hey, those resolutions sound pretty good – albeit a bit elusive. What’s your plan to accomplish them? What day-to-day habits will you change? How will you measure your success? We’re all for setting the bar high, but sometimes it’s the little, unexpected things that can improve your life and health the most. In 2018, try these ideas for being happier and healthier.
Be a better listener. Listening – not hearing, but real, active listening – takes practice. And if you’re a poor listener, you’re likely a poor communicator. Consciously identify these bad habits you may have, and work on breaking them: interrupting, distracting yourself, topping the other person’s story with your own and listening only long enough to find a problem.
Cut back on sugar. Let’s talk baby steps. Start at the grocery store, where you make the choice of what foods go into your cart, home and body. Don’t shop hungry, for one, and then stick mainly to the perimeter of the store, where foods tend to be fresh and whole. Read food labels, where sugar is identified and buy less and less of your sugar weak spots, such as soda, salad dressings and sweetened granola bars.
Get some sleep. Sleeping fewer than seven to eight hours per night doesn’t just make you cranky and induce coffee cravings. “Insufficient sleep has been linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and depression,” Cleveland Clinic tweeted in a U.S. News Twitter chat. Make this the year you perfect your sleep hygiene: Ditch electronics an hour before bedtime, stick to a sleep schedule, make your bedroom a dark, quiet sanctuary and replace worn-out mattresses.
Be healthier at work. First step: Take extra steps to the office by parking far away or jumping off the bus or train a stop early, and work walking breaks into your day. Stash fruits, veggies and nuts in your desk to fight vending machine cravings, and make a habit of packing lunch instead of dining out – your waistline and wallet will thank you. Want to treat your immune system? Disinfect that keyboard and phone! You can also use Acupuncture Pen and Tens Acupuncture Machine at work, they can make your work life easier.
Sit less and move more. It’s no longer news that sitting for long periods each day is unhealthy, but how exactly do you go about sitting less? Start with Eat + Run blogger Elisa Zied’s tips: Always wear comfortable shoes, rethink get-togethers with friends (more coffee to-go as you walk the park; less sitting and dining) and track the minutes per day you sit, so you have a starting time to gradually improve.
