Healthy Activities for the season of falling leaves

          You can feel it, right?The chill in the air and the rustle of leaves? You’ve noticed supermarkets stocking mums and pumpkins, Halloween pop-up shops and, overhead, the trademark vee of geese doing what they do this time of year. It’s autumn, friends! (Even the word sounds magical, or like it should be spoken with a British accent.) Cozy up in your sweaters and boots and catch the glimmer of cascading leaves and "It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown." But, for heaven’s sake, don’t just sit there! Enjoy the fall with healthy activities that suit the season.
Rake leaves – then jump in ‘em!
“It takes the labor out of the labor,” says Elisa Zied, a New York-based dietitian and Eat + Run blogger. This activity is a multitasker – it’s fun, productive and something you can do with your whole family, she says. Get the kids involved, and pump up the cardiovascular burn with relays around bagging the leaves, she says. Involve lunging, squatting and jumping to use lots of different muscles, and get the most out of this outdoor chore!
Make healthy fall treats.
Cornucopias full of squash and freckled gourds. Buckets of apples, and pumpkin galore. There’s a reason Thanksgiving meals inspire abundance. But don’t wait for the holiday to cook up fall’s bounty for a family meal. Make some roasted vegetables, light soups made with pumpkin or squash and healthy takes on your favorite treats – swap candied yams for baked sweet potato with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Go apple picking!
What’s more fun than picking apples? Eating them! A great family activity, apple picking can teach kids the joy of nature and nurture, so to speak. Apples are replete with soluble fiber, which helps lower cholesterol, Zied says. Enjoy them on their own, sliced with natural nut butters, crumbled over yogurt with granola or topped with whipped cream for a portion-controlled treat, she says. Another of Zied’s favorite fall foods? Baked apples. Just pop them in the oven and sprinkle cinnamon inside for a simple taste of fall.
Play a pick-up game.
Don’t just watch sports and tailgate. Get out and play! Get a group together for flag football or soccer and relish running around in the crisp air. You’ll have the chance to socialize and get a workout in. Just be sure to dress in layers to stay warm and keep hydrated – you may not feel overheated, but you’ll still need to replace lost fluids.
Go for a hike.
Hiking burns about 370 calories per hour for a 154-pound person, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You’re working several different muscle groups and possibly fighting off seasonal affective disorder, Zied says. “It’s just a great way to get that sunshine that you need to keep your mood high.” Whether you’re trekking somewhere with your family or a romantic partner, consider your hike an adventure, Zied says. Enjoy exploring, but be sure you’re fit for the trail, as some can be strenuous, she says.
Plant a vegetable garden.
Gardens aren’t just great for growing food. They’re a source of beauty, a calming retreat and a resource for learning, and teaching, about food, nature and the value of physical work. Beets, broccoli, beans or greens – whatever your pleasure, plant some seeds and enjoy the veggies of your labor.
